Not too Nippy for Nippers

Magnificent day heralded the opening of the 2008-2009 Surf Life-Saving season for the juniors today in Perth. Couple of the kids signed up to ‘Nippers’ with Floreat Surf Life Saving Club.
The Floreat Surf Life Saving Club was first formed 60 years ago by a band of strapping young men under the name of North City Surf Life Saving Club.
Nippers is essentially the involvement of the little tykes up to the age of 14. Training is geared towards learning surf safety and resuscitation skills whilst emphasizing essential team building skills. The kids just revel in the atmosphere of the fit and healthy lifestyle and in fact – 86% of elite Iron Persons in Australia have developed from the Nippers ranks!
A happy kid is safe, healthy and well educated to their natural environment
Surf Life Saving Australia has evolved into an organization known throughout the world for its voluntary humanitarian service. It is a tradition today maintained by members who are justly proud of, and recognise the importance of Surf Life Saving Australia’s motto ‘Vigilance and Service’
Best Sunday you will spend with your kids! Activities include Beach Running, Beach Flags and Turns, Wading and Diving – but be sure to adhere to the club rules!
- Be a good Sport
- Play by the rules
- Do your best and be proud of your efforts
- Encourage each other and congratulate each other
- Look aft er each other, particularly in the surf
- Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself
- No bullying / teasing
- No bad language
- Never argue with an official, but have your Manager approach the Official in the proper manner
- Cooperate with your coach, team-mates and other competitors

I remember my swimming lessons. Right on the beach in New York. Mid-summers in Rockaway Point (Breezy Point) NY and Summers on the Ionian Coast + Island of Sicily. When I went to school I never understood how city kids learned in pools. Where’s the surf and sand? I feel so lucky to have been raised on the coast line. Only cool part about being dumped was off a jetty or tied our raft. The days when you can actually see the bottom of the bay or ocean in NY. Those days are long gone…pity indeed. I hope the rest of the world will learn from our wasted U.S. coastlines.
